Young guns in line for Sydney FC start

Sydney FC coach Vitezslav Lavicka hasn't ruled out starting both A-League young guns Joel Chianese and Mitchell Mallia against Wellington on Saturday.

The speedy pair have breathed life into the now sixth-placed Sky Blues with 22-year-old Chianese scoring the opener in Sunday's 2-1 away win over Adelaide and Mallia slotting a brilliant 80th minute winner.

Mallia, 19, came on as a substitute for Chianese, who played with a fractured arm suffered in the lead-up to the Reds clash.

Lavicka was asked on Monday if he was considering naming both attackers in the run-on side against the fourth-placed Phoenix at the Sydney Football Stadium.

"It's hard to say now ... it's a good question. We have a couple of days to make that decision," Lavicka said.

"We need new players coming in who bring energy ... We have two young heroes now.

"Both scored very important goals. Joel Chianese showed his character playing with his injury and Mitchell Mallia only spent a few minutes on the park but his value was very high, he scored a great goal."

The win over Adelaide gave Sydney consecutive victories after beating Perth 2-1.

Chianese said the Sky Blues were buzzing but had to improve in front of goal if they were to give the competition a shake.

"It was a great performance to get three points but there's plenty of room for improvement," Chianese said.

"We've got to take our chances. If we can be more affective in the front third, then we can finish teams off earlier and not be under so much pressure like we were last night.

"On a personal note, though, it was great to score my first goal.

"... The finals are still a little way off ... we've got to get there first but, if we can, I think we've got the squad and players to give it a real shake.

"The club is really positive at the moment."

Chianese and Mallia have played together for the bulk of the season in Sydney's youth league team before getting their chance in the top side deep into the season.

"The coaching staff have showed confidence in us young boys and the experienced players have helped us too ... of course you always want to start games but I'm grateful for the opportunities I've received and I just want to keep making the most of them."

Goalkeeper Ivan Necevski looks to have cemented his place as Sydney's custodian after a man-of-the-match winning effort against Adelaide.

Necevski has been the understudy to Liam Reddy but has turned in a couple of brilliant displays since getting a promotion.

"It's quiet difficult because both are experienced and both are quality keepers," Lavicka said.

"Ivan Necevski did a very good job last night (Sunday) he made a couple of great saves and full credit to him ... Liam Reddy is a bit upset but he is still supporting Ivan and Liam deserves credit for that too."
