Martinez: Moses is our Messi

Roberto Martinez has compared forward Victor Moses to FIFA World Player of the Year Lionel Messi as the club continue talks over a new contract.

Victor Moses currently has just 18 months to run on his deal at the DW Stadium. Martinez sees the 21-year-old as one of the top talents in England and is desperate for the player to put pen to paper.

With Wigan currently bottom of the Premier League table, Martinez is fully aware that he could lose his top talents if the Latics are relegated this season. A player of Moses' calibre would attract plenty of attention.

The former Crystal Palace man can be rated no higher than at his current club, though, where Martinez believes he has the skills of a world star.

Martinez said: "His actions in one-on-ones are sensational, and when you see him in possession, you think he could easily have been born in Holland or Spain.

"You don't see many players like that in the modern game. Charles N'Zogbia is one, Lionel Messi another - albeit on a different scale.

"Victor is growing all the time. He is taking responsibility and learning to look up and deliver the final pass, and this is turning into the biggest season of his career.

"He plays a massive role for us and is an important asset. There have been developments in the talks over a new agreement, and I am sure we are going to be able to extend his contract.

"He has said he wants to stay, but the situation of the club has to be resolved first. We have to secure our top-flight status, then we can do it."
