Levy waits on Redknapp

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy will be closely monitoring Harry Redknapp's response to questions on the England job when the Spurs manager is confronted by the media on Friday for his press conference before the game against Newcastle.

• Brewin: No backward glances for Fabio
• Pardew: England job not for me
• Capello exit makes waves in Italy
• Capello resigns as England boss
• Wilshere 'gutted' over Fabio exit

Redknapp was granted a day off on Thursday after the trauma of a two-week tax evasion trial, which culminated in him being cleared of all charges. He will be firmly in the spotlight again with a media inquisition likely about his intentions for the national job after Fabio Capello sensationally quit.

Levy is hopeful that Redknapp will declare his allegiance to the club that stood by him during the trial, and to the fans who have also backed him, while a new contract offer is on the table to keep him at the Lane. Redknapp has 15 months remaining on his current deal.

However, it will be expecting a lot to believe that Redknapp will publicly renounce any ambition to manage his country. In fact, he has previously made it clear that any Englishman asked to manage his country would be hard pressed to turn the offer down - himself included - irrespective of how tough the job has become.

Equally, Levy is in no mood to allow the Football Association to take his manager without a fight. He has the option of simply denying the FA permission to talk to Redknapp as the manager is still under contract.

Levy might argue that compensation should be much higher than the 15 months left on Redknapp's contract, given the compensation paid to get him from Portsmouth in the first place, and the cost of hiring a new manager. All that might be out of range for the cash-strapped FA, which has admitted that Capello was expensive.

ESPNsoccernet contacted Spurs for a comment, but the club are offering up nothing more than a "no comment". But the club are not disputing the fact that their fans want to keep the manager and the board led by Levy plans to do exactly that.
