Hoddle expects Spurs to fight for Harry

Former England and Tottenham manager Glenn Hoddle does not anticipate that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will allow Harry Redknapp to leave his managerial post without a fight.

• Levy silent on England target Harry
• Capello quits England

Redknapp is the clear favourite to succeed Fabio Capello as England manager after the Italian resigned as national team coach on Wednesday following the FA's decision to strip John Terry of the side's captaincy.

Redknapp is currently enjoying an impressive spell of success with his club Tottenham, with the team third in the table and impressing with their free-flowing football.

The FA would likely have to pay hefty compensation to release him from his contract at White Hart Lane, which has 15 months left to run, and although Hoddle believes Redknapp will ultimately be handed the reins, he thinks it will have to wait until the domestic season concludes.

He told ESPNsoccernet: "I don't think Spurs will let him go at the moment, that's for sure. But it's only one game, the Netherlands match [on February 29], where Stuart Pearce can take the team.

"Harry Redknapp will want to be in charge when England play Poland in May and he will want to take England to the European Championships and the FA will want that too, I am sure.

"If the FA can do a deal with Spurs now, there is no reason why Harry Redknapp couldn't take three days with the England team for the Netherlands match at the end of the month, but I cannot see anything being put in place in time - I cannot see Spurs releasing him until the summer at the earliest."

The experienced Guus Hiddink, who is currently a free agent, has also been mooted as a candidate for the position, having impressed when in caretaker charge of Chelsea.

Hiddink is believed to be open to a return to management in England, and could feasibly be a contender to replace Redknapp, should the Spurs boss seal his expected switch to England. Rafael Benitez has also reportedly put his name forward.
