Sevilla hire Michel to succeed Marcelino

Former Getafe manager Michel has been appointed as Sevilla's new boss until the end of the season, with the promise of an extended deal if he can guide them into the Champions League.

• Marcelino sacked by Sevilla

Michel replaces Marcelino, who was sacked on Monday with Sevilla 11th in the standings and just four points above the relegation zone.

The Andalusian side had picked up just two points from their last seven games, and on Sunday were beaten 2-1 at home by relegation-threatened Villarreal.

Michel won six La Liga titles and two UEFA Cups during a distinguished 14-year playing career with Real Madrid and also made 66 appearances for Spain.

He began his managerial career with Rayo Vallecano in 2005, going on to take charge of Real Madrid B and most notably Getafe, who he saved from relegation at the end of the 2008-09 season.

The appointment, confirmed by Sevilla on their official website, came as somewhat of a surprise as Real Mallorca boss Joaquin Caparros had been the favorite to take the reins.
