Bassong ready for the fight

New Wolves signing Sebastien Bassong says he has gladly swapped a Premier League title battle for a relegation fight because of his desire for first-team football.

• Wolves take Bassong on loan

Tottenham defender Bassong joined Wolves on loan for the rest of the season just minutes before the transfer window closed on Tuesday evening, and the Cameroon international will instantly be involved in Wolves boss Mick McCarthy's plans for Saturday's clash with QPR at Loftus Road.

Bassong said: "I've been chatting with the manager and chairman at Tottenham to see how things stood and whether I would be coming out on loan. I think it is a very good move for me.

"There are some very good players at Tottenham and they are having a fantastic season, but I just want to try and play football and I am hoping this will be a good place for me to do that.

"Of course, it's a different challenge to Spurs, the different end of the table, but I know that there is a challenge ahead and I wanted to be a part of it.

"I am sure there is enough quality in the dressing room to stay up. You only stay in the Premier League if you deserve to and, if we do everything properly, then I think we will do it."

Bassong will be reunited with midfielder Jamie O'Hara, who moved from White Hart Lane to Molineux last summer after a successful loan spell.

He said: "I've played a few games with Jamie at Tottenham. He's a very good player and it's good he's back fit. I spoke to him about coming here and he gave me a good reference! I'm looking forward to linking up with him again."

Bassong is under no illusions about the challenge ahead at Loftus Road after QPR's spending spree during the transfer window.

He said: "QPR did well in the transfer window and bought some quality players. We're in the position here where every game is like a cup final. We've got to take each game really seriously and give our best. If we do that we've got a chance of getting a result on Saturday."
