Wilshere suffers new stress fracture

ESPNsoccernet has learned Jack Wilshere has sustained a new "small stress fracture", although the Arsenal midfielder has not yet been ruled out for the rest of the season.

• Wilshere suffers injury setback

Last week, Wilshere, 20, suffered a setback in his rehabilitation from ankle surgery, sparking fears the England international will not make his comeback this campaign and will subsequently miss Euro 2012.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger offered a more positive outlook over the weekend, but a report on Tuesday morning suggested the youngster's setback looks long-term.

ESPNsoccernet understands the latest injury is in a different area of the ankle to Wilshere's original problem, and the playmaker has been pencilled in for a scan in two weeks' time to determine the extent of the problem.

Wenger is set to make an announcement on the matter after his side's trip to Bolton on Wednesday night, with the club hopeful Wilshere will still appear during the 2011-12 season.

On Wednesday afternoon, Arsenal issued the following statement: "The club can confirm Jack Wilshere has a small stress fracture to his right foot, however it is not accurate to state he has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

"The injury is in a different area to his previous surgery, and it will be reassessed in around two weeks time by our medical team and medical experts who have worked together throughout Jack's recovery.

"This is a recognised complication of a complex rehabilitation process and, of critical importance, Jack's initial injury is recovering well."
