Moyes hopeful of Jelavic firepower

Everton manager David Moyes is hopeful new signing Nikica Jelavic will finally solve his side's goalscoring problems.

• Toffees seal Jelavic swoop from Gers
• D-Day done deals

Jelavic completed his move to the Premier League side from Rangers on transfer deadline day, for a fee believed to be worth an initial £5.5 million. Moyes has struggled for attacking options in recent times at Goodison Park - occasionally even fielding sides without a recognised striker - but believes Jelavic has the qualities to become the focal point of a more prolific Toffees attack.

Jelavic is one of four new faces the club added in January, alongside the permanent acquisition of Darron Gibson and loan signings of Steven Pienaar and Landon Donovan. Those new faces, coupled with Tuesday's league triumph over Manchester City, have made Moyes optimistic for the future.

"It is great news for us. We have been looking for a centre-forward for a while," Moyes said of Jelavic. "We just hope now he can help us score some goals and we can build on the performance.

"Denis [Stracqualursi] has done great and with Jelavic coming in hopefully it bodes well for the coming months. I think he would have seen the hard work that the players put in.

"He is coming from a great football club but I think he is coming to another great football club. He really wants to play in the Premier League and he really wants to play for Everton. That goes a long way.

"He will also want to play for Croatia in the European Championship so hopefully that will keep his form good, keep him hungry to score and play well."

Jelavic is aware that he is making a step up in class, but believes he has the ability to cope.

"It is a big thing for me and it is a new step in my career, a step forward," Jelavic told the club's official website. "I am very pleased and very excited, it is a new challenge for me.

"The Scottish Premier League is not as high a level as here in England but I think it will help a lot as it is not so much a big difference. I think I can bring some good football and to score many goals and to try to win some trophies."

The new signings have lifted the spirits of the other players too, with Phil Neville saying on Twitter: "When you have new signings it massively lifts the players, it tells us the club are ambitious and are moving forward. It inspires the fans too."
