Liverpool rule out deal for Defoe

Liverpool told ESPNsoccernet two hours before the close of the transfer window that they were not bidding for Jermaine Defoe.

With Defoe left out of the Tottenham team by Harry Redknapp on Tuesday, rumour spread like wildfire that Defoe was a transfer target of Kenny Dalglish.

But an Anfield official told ESPNsoccernet: "No, nothing in that, there is no bid for Jermaine Defoe."

In a relatively low-key transfer deadline day, the prospect of the England international moving between two of the Premier League elite sounded like the biggest move of the day.

As Liverpool were linked with an audacious enquiry for Carlos Tevez, anything might have been possible despite Dalglish stressing he did not expect any transfer activity on the last day. And as it turned out, Dalglish was correct, as Liverpool quickly denied any move for Deofe.

In addition, Phil Smith, the agent who represents Harry Redknapp, told ESPNsoccernet: "I cannot believe that Harry would sell Defoe, so discount a move to Liverpool."
