Buckley hails Brighton fans after upset

Brighton midfielder Will Buckley commended the Amex Stadium faithful for their fervent support after Newcastle were put to the sword by the Seagulls in the FA Cup fourth round.

Buckley: It's a great moment for the club

•  Pardew: It was Brighton's Day
•  Poyet: It's been incredible
•  Match highlights (UK/ROI)
• ESPN Extra Time - analysis

Buckley's 76th-minute shot was deflected in off Mike Williamson to secure a famous 1-0 victory over the Magpies on Saturday.

But the former Watford and Rochdale man insisted he did not care that his strike was likely to go down as own goal, and took the opportunity to praise Brighton's supporters for the part they played in the club's progress to the fifth round.

"I'd like to have it but who cares, we're through to the fifth round," Buckley told ESPN. "I can't even hear myself think, it's just brilliant. It's just a joy to play here, they are like a 12th man.

"It was a hard game, they are a Premiership side and we were on the back foot most of the first half.''

Brighton boss Gus Poyet was impressed with Buckley's performance and praised his side's efforts against the Magpies.

"He's unpredictable, when everybody gets a little bit tired he keeps sprinting and going past people,'' Poyet gushed. "We started well again, we started brave. We kept going for it. After 15 minutes Newcastle got the ball and kept passing it.

"We got to half-time and then it was a matter of saying let's do the same and then we know something is going to happen for us.''

Alan Pardew admitted his Newcastle team had failed to take their chances against their Championship opposition.

"I felt we weren't threatening their goal enough. They defended well, Brighton, to be fair to them," Pardew said.

"We had a good grip of the game (in the first half), we felt comfortable. We just struggled to get more shots on goal, to get more chances.''
