Elephants advance, Sudan fight on

Ivory Coast booked their place in the African Nations Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso.

Salomon Kalou gave the Elephants the lead in the first half, before a Bakary Kone own goal later in the game sealed the win, and a last-eight berth.

The result left Burkina Faso unable to qualify after they also lost their opening fixture to Angola, with the Stallions now only playing for pride against Sudan in their final Group B match.

Burkina Faso had their chances in a entertaining encounter in Malabo, with Beli Moumouni Dagano hitting the crossbar late on and Alain Traore a regular threat with his long-range thunderbolts, but Ivory Coast also had a raft of opportunities and they will hope their finishing improves in the latter rounds as they seek only their second Nations Cup title.

Sudan twice came back from a goal down against Angola to claim a 2-2 draw and their first point of this year's tournament.

Mohamed Youssif Basheer's brace - Sudan's first goals in the tournament since 1976 - cancelled out two goals from in-form Angola striker Manucho as the spoils were shared in an entertaining Group B clash in Malabo.

The result leaves Sudan with one point having lost their opening game to Ivory Coast 1-0 while Angola move onto four points having beaten Burkina Faso 2-1 in their first outing.
