LA Galaxy confirm Lampard interest

LA Galaxy have admitted their interest in Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard as they look for another star to join their ranks.

• Beckham rejected return home for LA

Lampard's long-term future at Stamford Bridge is far from certain, as he continues to be at loggerheads with Blues manager Andre Villas-Boas about his status within the first-team squad.

With David Beckham agreeing a new contract at Galaxy, the MLS side currently have a full quota of 'Designated Players' (DP) exempt from the league salary cap - Beckham, Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan - but club owner Tim Leiweke confirmed that Lampard is on their list of targets if one of those names left and they were able to attract another high-profile name.

"I'm a fan of Frank's, I think he's a great player. When I think of Chelsea I think of Frank Lampard," Leiweke told Sky Sports.

When asked if Lampard could be persuaded to come to LA, he added: "You should ask him that.

"It took us two years to get David to come here the first time. We're working on the next DP and we'll continue to work on the next DP. There are half a dozen guys we have a good relationship with and we'll see how that goes.

"But first we've got to have a spot, and at the moment we don't have a spot. [But] I'm sure a big fan of his."

Beckham, who has extended his stay in California by another two years, added that he would not be surprised if Lampard eventually made the move to the club.

"If he does decide to walk away from Chelsea, then of course what team wouldn't want Frank Lampard?," Beckham said. "The owners here are very persuasive, so of course there is a chance."

Beckham reportedly turned down interest from Paris St Germain to remain in Los Angeles, although he confirmed he never spoke to Manchester United about a surprise return.

"I can't say who it was [I did have talks with] because I think it's unfair, but I didn't speak to Manchester United, no," Beckham said.
