The Soweto Derby: A rich history and a tragic past

AVB: Ancelotti wide of the mark

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has rejected Carlo Ancelotti's claim that Chelsea must sell Didier Drogba if Fernando Torres is to have any chance of being successful at Stamford Bridge.

Torres, a £50 million arrival from Liverpool last January, has failed to come anywhere near the form he showed in his early years at Liverpool leading to speculation he could be sold this month.

But rather than offloading Torres, new PSG boss Ancelotti, who was in charge of Chelsea when the Spaniard was signed, said it was Drogba who should make way for Torres to flourish.

"For me, it's not the case," Villas-Boas said. "Fernando has been with us a year and is in a great moment of form and looking sharp.

"In a club of our dimension, we have top competition. The people you compete with are as good or better than you and you have to compete to reach the starting XI.

"It's the same with Barcelona and Real Madrid. You compete with the best within the group.''

He added of Torres, who has netted only five times for the West London club and has not scored since October: "It hurts everybody in the sense of goal statistics but he's doing tremendously for the team. He's a striker with a hunger for goals who wants to be in the box.

"We've seen him in the box, we've seen him arrive and create danger. As long as he's working well for the team, I don't care how the statistics will finish and how dramatic people think they are.''

Ancelotti was quoted as saying on Wednesday: "Coaching Chelsea in the midst of a major generational change is complicated. Look at Torres and his crisis. If you decide you are going to invest in him, you have to sell Drogba.

"Didier is like Pippo Inzaghi at Milan. He tends to swallow up all his competitors. It is not because they are evil, they are just like that."
