Leverkusen reject Berbatov bid talk

Bayer Leverkusen have dismissed reports that they are planning to offer Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov a chance to return to the Bundesliga.

• Lindegaard backs De Gea to come good

Berbatov, 30, left Leverkusen for Tottenham in 2006 after six successful seasons at the BayArena - during which time he scored 91 goals in 201 appearances.

The Bulgarian forward has been kept out of the United side by Danny Welbeck more often than not this season and, despite netting five goals in two games over the festive period, he now appears to have fallen out of favour again.

A host of clubs have been linked with Berbatov's signature, including Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and PSG, but his former club say they are not plotting a swoop.

"I have been reading that Dimitar would have flown over to Frankfurt and that we would be in for him there to negotiate a transfer," Leverkusen executive Wolfgang Holzhauser told Express. "That was interesting news to me.

"I am clearly out to never say never, but this is nothing we are looking forward to at this point in time. And from today's point of view I would also say we are not after him in the coming summer."

Russian clubs Anzhi Makhachkala and CSKA Moscow have also reportedly been monitoring Berbatov's situation, but his agent Emil Danchev insists that his future is at United.

"Usually I don't comment on speculation from the press. They can say whatever they want," Danchev told Sovetski Sport. "But the only thing that I can say is that at this moment the eventual transfer of Berbatov to another club is not on the agenda."
