Van Bommel glad to keep Pato

AC Milan midfielder Mark van Bommel is backing team-mate Alexandre Pato to prove to be a decisive player for the club this season after the Brazilian came close to leaving the San Siro.

• Pato: Milan is my home

Pato, 22, looked set to part ways with Milan for Ligue 1 side PSG after a fee in the region of €35 million was reportedly agreed between the two sides.

The striker, however, opted to remain with the Serie A champions, subsequently scuppering a potential swoop from Milan for Manchester City's Carlos Tevez.

Van Bommel has been buoyed by Pato's decision, telling the Milan Channel: "We should stop talking about that now. Pato is staying here with us. If he can stay calm and relaxed then you will all see that he will produce some great things."

Milan suffered a 1-0 loss to fierce rivals Inter on Sunday, and Van Bommel has conceded Claudio Ranieri's men merited their win following a disciplined display.

"It was hard for him against Inter on Sunday," Van Bommel said. "Inter defended well and it wasn't easy to find the right kind of space to do damage."
