Bale aims to dent City title hopes

Gareth Bale says Tottenham will travel to Manchester City full of confidence as they look to boost their own claims in the Premier League title race.

Bale and his team-mates visit the Etihad Stadium on Sunday knowing victory would help make up some of the ground lost during Saturday's surprise draw with Wolves. Only third-placed Tottenham seem capable of preventing the Manchester clubs from winning the title and Bale insists his team are full of self-belief.

"It will be a big game and one we're looking forward to. There is no reason why we can't pull off a result there," he said.

"City still have a great squad and a great team and no matter what team they put out it will be difficult to play against.

"It wasn't a great start to the season losing to the two Manchester clubs, but all the lads have shown what a great spirit we have here and the determination we have. We've come a long way since then.

"We know we have to play our best football to beat them - they gave us a lesson at home at the start of the season. They started the season very well which wasn't good for us, but we bounced back. I'm sure it will be a great game."

The setback against Wolves may have damaged Tottenham's chances of challenging the top two, but they remain within touching distance.

The club's ability to sustain their title chase has been a source of debate and Bale insists they are benefiting from the lack of expectation on their shoulders.

"We're not getting too carried away. We will take it one game at a time - I'm sure all the lads will say that," he said. "We know we're playing good football and hopefully we'll keep plugging away and keep ourselves in contention.

"There's no pressure. I don't think anyone expects us to win the Premier League, we're up there on merit and enjoying our football. As long as we're doing that we'll hopefully keep picking up points and keep ourselves in contention at the end.

"We're playing some great football, need to keep playing that way and stay together as a squad. It will not be easy to get above Manchester City and Manchester United, but we'll give it a good go."

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has yet to make any signings during the transfer window, but hopes to recruit two new faces. Bale would welcome additions to the squad, but insists it is already strong enough to continue defying expectations.

"If a player becomes available who will help our team or squad, then it's good for us to get that player in," said Bale. "If not, we're doing well enough with the good squad we've got.

"We've got a few injuries to come back - Scott Parker, Sandro, William Gallas and Ledley King - so we have a good squad. It will be a tough second half of the season, but one we're looking forward to."
