Adam targets silverware

Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam is determined to make sure the club complete the job against Manchester City in the Carling Cup and bring a trophy back to Anfield this season.

A Steven Gerrard penalty proved the difference at Eastlands on Wednesday night, ensuring Liverpool will have a slender advantage for the return leg back on Merseyside on January 25.

Adam is now confident of setting up a final date against the winner of the other semi-final between Championship clubs Cardiff City and Crystal Palace, but believes trips to Wembley and winning trophies should become second nature for a club like Liverpool.

The last time Liverpool won a trophy was in 2006 when they beat West Ham United in the FA Cup final. But they have not played at Wembley since 1996, when they lost out to Manchester United in the FA Cup.

"This club should be winning trophies and it has been a number years since it last won a trophy - so we want to try to win as many trophies as we can," Adam was quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror. "We are in a semi-final and we have an FA Cup game against Manchester United. We are still in the cup and we will try to win it.

"To come to a club like this is an honour. It is a great club with a great history. And you know the club should be winning trophies. To perform like we did at City and to get a clean sheet there will give us massive confidence.

"We were looking forward to this - we are happy with our performance, and obviously we would take that 1-0 win into any second leg at Anfield. We turned things around after losing 3-0 there, and that was pleasing, but I do think the tie is still open, they have top players so it is going to be tough.

"It is nowhere near done, and we have got 90 minutes of hard work. But we have terrific support behind us and hopefully we can do the job. If we prepare right it could lead to a terrific night."
