Argentina dream of appointing Guardiola

Recently-crowned FIFA coach of the year Pep Guardiola has been pinpointed as Argentina's "dream" coach for the future, according to Argentina Football Association chief Julio Grondona.

Guardiola has led Barcelona into a successful era since taking the reins in 2008, winning the UEFA Champions League, La Liga, Spanish Supercopa and FIFA Club World Cup crowns in the past year. Since the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Argentina have seen Diego Maradona and Sergio Batista leave the role of head coach, with Alejandro Sabella taking over national team duties last summer.

"If the Argentina FA had the financial possibility, Guardiola would be the coach of the national team," Grondona told Ona FM. "It would be a dream to appoint him as coach."

Grondona also stated his desire to see Guardiola's Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi win the World Cup for Argentina during his career, but insists the playmaker will be considered one of the greats of the game regardless of international silverware.

"It would be very important that Messi won a World Cup with Argentina," he said. "But it is not necessary that he does it to be the best, considering all that he has won.

"There is no doubt that, although Argentina have not won a World Cup title [with Messi], we have won one of the best players in the world. We are proud of Messi, not the other way around."
