QPR owner Tony Fernandes saw fit to remove Warnock from his position at the weekend following the club's 1-1 draw with MK Dons in the FA Cup.

The club, who were promoted from the Championship last season, have also slipped down the Premier League table to a place above the relegation zone, having won just one of their last 11 top flight matches.

Hughes emerged as the bookmakers' favourite to succeed Warnock, with the Welshman a free agent after leaving the Cottagers in June 2011, and he arrived at Loftus Road with representative Kia Joorabchian at 3pm GMT on Monday to begin discussions with the club.

QPR chief executive Philip Beard told BBC Radio Five Live: "I can't confirm anything, what I can tell every QPR fan is that we're working extremely hard to bring in the right person to build some stability at the club and then build for the future.

"We've talked to a lot of people in the game. We've got to get the decision absolutely right.

"We've been working very very hard in the last 48 hours to make sure that we can put in place a structure that we feel can deliver success to Queens Park Rangers, hopefully for this season but certainly beyond.''
