Cameroon reduce Eto'o ban

Samuel Eto'o is to miss just four competitive games for Cameroon after seeing his ban reduced to eight months.

• Eto'o given 15-match ban

Anzhi Makhachkala striker Eto'o had been given a 15-match ban after he and vice-captain Eyong Enoh were found guilty of encouraging team-mates not to travel to Algeria for a friendly in November.

However, Cameroon President Paul Biya asked his country's Football Federation to reduce the ban and, after a meeting, the decision was taken on Saturday morning.

A statement on Fecafoot's website confirmed that the sanction has been cut and suggested the committee had taken into account Eto'o's enormous popularity in the country given his long career in the national team, saying that although he was required to be a model of "patriotism, loyalty and commitment" as captain he "is a world famous athlete who has rendered outstanding services to the national team of Cameroon".

Enoh has also seen his reduced and he will now only be suspended for one competitive game, while Benoit Assou-Ekotto - who had been fined one million CFA francs - has seen his punishment rescinded.

Cameroon failed to qualify the 2012 African Nations Cup but begin qualification for the 2013 tournament against Guinea-Bissau on February 29 and then play Congo DR on June 1 and Libya on June 8 in World Cup 2014 qualifiers before playing the return leg against Guinea-Bissau on June 15.
