Victory get lucky

Melbourne Victory scraped to a 2-1 win over Newcastle Jets in front of new manager Jim Magilton - courtesy of two Byun Sung-Hwan own goals.

• Magilton named Victory boss

The South Korean full-back got an unwanted final touch on Danny Allsopp's shot in the seventh minute - and put the ball past his own keeper Ben Kennedy again in the 74th, by which point his team were down to ten men following the sending-off of Tarek Elrich.

Ryan Griffiths pulled a goal back in the closing stages but it was too little too late for the Jets, who slipped below their hosts in the table.

Second-placed Brisbane Roar were held to a controversial 1-1 draw away to Adelaide United in the day's other game.

Issey Nakajima-Farran, who was perhaps lucky to escape with a yellow card after his first-half challenge on Fabian Barbiero sparked a melee, gave Brisbane the lead on the hour but Sergio van Dijk equalised from the penalty spot after Matthew Smith was harshly adjudged to have fouled him in the area.
