Redknapp eyes Ganso - and title
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is aiming to make two big name signings in January to boost his side's Premier League title hopes and is reportedly interested in a move for Santos starlet Ganso.
Santos president Luis Ribeiro said earlier this week that he would not stand in Ganso's way should he wish to leave the club and the Daily Telegraph report that the Brazilian's agent is in London to begin transfer negotiations.
"If the player wants to leave, we will have to listen to offers. But as of today, no offer for him has yet arrived," Ribeiro told O Globo on Wednesday. "The desire of the player is most important. If Ganso wants to leave Santos and our interests are preserved, we can negotiate."
Spurs currently sit third in the table, six points behind league leaders Manchester City with a game in hand. While admitting that he is surprised with how well his side have done so far this season, Redknapp does not believe overhauling both City and arch-rivals Manchester United over the second half of the campaign is out of the question - especially if reinforcements are brought in.
"If you'd told me six months ago that my Spurs side would be right in the mix for the title, I'd have laughed," Redknapp told The Sun. "And if we could find a couple of new faces to improve us even further over the next month, then who knows where this season could take us?
"I'm not about to say the Premier League is coming to Tottenham because there are still so many who could have a big say.
"But we'll know better where we stand by the end of January - it could be a crucial month for us."
Spurs have been strongly linked with a move for Bolton defender Gary Cahill, as well as Ganso, in recent days, and Redknapp has acknowledged that he and his team of scouts are searching high and low for the sort of player that can improve his options at White Hart Lane.
"The problem we have now when we look for players is that the better you get, the more difficult it is to find someone who will take you even higher," he said. "Believe me, there aren't that many out there - but we won't fall down on that score through a lack of looking."
A deal for Ganso, who already has seven international caps, would reportedly cost in the region of £15 million. Spurs have also been linked with the Blackburn duo of Junior Hoilett and Christopher Samba.
