QPR appeal Barton red card

QPR have decided to appeal to the Football Association against the red card Joey Barton received against Norwich at Loftus Road.

•  QPR 1-2 Norwich

Barton had given Rangers an early lead on Monday before then getting involved in a tussle with Bradley Johnson, and appearing to headbutt the Norwich midfielder.

Initially play continued, before referee Neil Swarbrick consulted his assistant nearest to the incident and then produced a red card. Television footage of the clash between Barton and Johnson initially proved inconclusive, with no real close-ups because of the position of cameras at the stadium.

What was clear from the long-range pictures was that Barton clashed with Norwich defender Zak Whitbread and then Johnson in the centre circle, ahead of directly squaring up to the Canaries midfielder.

QPR manager NeilWarnock branded Johnson a "disgrace'' for his reaction. It is understood that the FA have decided the post-match comments from manager Warnock do not warrant any further action.

Barton later hit out at the "ridiculous decision" on Twitter, saying: ''Well feel for the officials, they've been conned. Admitted to me at HT they never saw it. I was pulled back 1st, then kicked 2nd.

''Linesman definitely never saw it, all he seen was Johnsons reaction. My head doesn't move forward at all. Ridiculous decision seen 25 replays.''

Barton continued his defence on the social networking site, adding: ''I'd be 1st to apologise if I'd reacted. Cannot apologise as I know I've not head butted anyone. Disappointed for the lads and the fans. Make ur own minds up when u see it. The games gone!''

Barton also called for the incident to be reviewed. He added: ''Hopefully referee sees it retrospectively and sees he's been conned. Its no consolation for us right now but at least its something.''

After QPR's appeal had been confirmed on the club's website Barton again took to Twitter to suggest a new way to deal with controversial flashpoints during games: "We have the best officiated game in the world on our doorstep (rugby). Why dont we stop listening to FIFA beaucrats and move our game forward?

"Referees would embrace all the technology available in my opinion. Game needs to move forward. Incidents like y'days would be cited and dealt with retrospectively if the officials, were unclear/unsure. I also feel it would lead to respect like rugby.

"Those 3 points Sunday, could be difference between Premier League survival and not. That equates to alot of money."
