Villa linked with Keane loan bid

Aston Villa are pushing to sign LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane on a two-month loan deal, according to widespread reports.

• Bent not for sale
• Becks for LA stay?

Villa boss Alex McLeish is eager to bolster his options upfront following Monday's 2-0 loss at home to Swansea, which ended with irate fans questioning his management of the club.

He is a known admirer of Keane, who will be in England training with Tottenham, his former club, until January 21, and came close to signing him last season when in charge at Birmingham, only for the deal to collapse over personal terms. Keane went on to join West Ham on loan before heading to Los Angeles in the summer.

LA Galaxy have recently allowed star forward Landon Donovan to join Everton on a short-term deal in the MLS off-season, while previously they have been willing to let out David Beckham.

Villa striker Darren Bent has been linked with a move to Liverpool - but, with McLeish insisting the England international is not up for sale, it is unlikely Keane will be used as a temporary replacement.

Meanwhile, McLeish is hoping left-back Enda Stevens can quickly adjust to the demands of the Premier League after completing his move from Shamrock Rovers.

Stevens has become Villa's first capture of the January transfer window, although he signed a pre-contract last summer to make the move to the club on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international was allowed to remain with Shamrock for the first half of the campaign and competed in the Europa League.

McLeish said: "It will be nice to have another body in the squad and Enda is a player who has got some potential. He's a young player. There was a wee bit of interest in him and we decided to sign him.

"It is up to Enda to hit the ground running and do well and leave me thinking 'let's get this guy involved.' We are hoping will get to grips with everything, adapt very quickly to put pressure on guys like Stephen (Warnock).''

Dublin-born Stevens had spells with UCD and St Patrick's Athletic before joining Shamrock in December 2009 and helping them to win the league title at the end of his first season.

He made his Republic Under-21 debut against Cyprus 10 months ago.
