Redknapp targets marquee signing

Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is looking to bring in a world class player in the January transfer window that will send a clear message to their Premier League title rivals.

• King buoyed by Christmas standings

Tottenham, who have won seven of their last nine games, can cut the gap to leaders Manchester City to four points if they win their two games in hand, starting on Tuesday night at Carrow Road against Norwich, and Redknapp wants to further improve his talented squad.

The Spurs boss reportedly missed out on signing strike duo Sergio Aguero and Giuseppe Rossi last season and has urged chairman Daniel Levy to land a January target that will "make a difference" this time around.

"We've got to be a club looking to go places," Redknapp told The Sun. "The potential is great here. We sell out every week, we've got good players.

"If we're going to make a signing, let's make one big signing. That would send out a message. But it's difficult finding that player who would make a difference."

Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror suggests that Redknapp would be willing to offload midfielders Stephen Pienaar and Nico Kranjcar to help fund any big money transfer swoop.

Selling the duo could bring in up to £8 million.
