Blues decide against T-shirts

Chelsea have confirmed they rejected the idea of players wearing T-shirts in support of John Terry following the controversy sparked at Liverpool.

Terry is facing a trip to the magistrates court on February 1 after he was charged with racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand, and a report in The Sun said the England captain had suggested to his team-mates that they follow the lead of the Liverpool players in supporting Luis Suarez ahead of their game at Wigan.

The idea apparently received the support of several of the Chelsea players and members of the backroom staff, but the club were mindful of the fact that it could be construed as an attempt to influence the legal proceedings and be considered contempt of court.

A club spokesman said: "We were aware of the idea being discussed among some of the players and staff.

"The club fully supports John but did not think the wearing of T-shirts was an appropriate or helpful show of that support."

Liverpool received condemnation from several quarters for their decision to don Suarez T-shirts.
