Stoke's Charlie Adam disappointed as wonder goal brings no reward

Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam was frustrated that his stunning goal from inside his own half at Chelsea had not brought his side any reward.

The Scot looked up, saw Thibaut Courtois off his line and lofted in a spectacular strike to send Stoke in at the break level, but Chelsea struck in the second half to take all the points at Stamford Bridge.

Adam told Sky Sports after the 2-1 defeat: "The disappointing thing is we lost the game.

"On a personal note, it is a great goal to score. I saw the keeper off his line, had an effort and it has gone in.

"I always have a look at the goalkeeper because these balls move so much. When you have got that much space and time, it is good to do something like that.

"It was great to get back into the game, but we lost it and that is three [defeats] on the bounce.

"We need to come back against West Ham next week."

Stoke boss Mark Hughes praised the audacity of Adam, but rued missing out on the Potters' first Stamford Bridge point in 21 years.

"It was an outrageous attempt and thankfully it's gone in," Hughes said. "At the time I wasn't quite sure what he was attempting, but it became very clear.

"Fantastic vision and technical ability to beat a goalkeeper of Courtois' quality from that distance."

Stoke teammate Peter Odemwingie wrote on Twitter that he had seen Adam score many such efforts in training.

Adam's former Liverpool colleague Jamie Carragher, meanwhile, joked that the midfielder had regularly tried to score similar goals during his time on Merseyside.

Another former Liverpool star, Michael Owen, said the goal should not be considered the best of the season.

Ex-Manchester United defender Gary Neville, though, tweeted simply: "Incredible."

Stoke are 10th after a third straight loss, which came after an "uncharacteristic" Asmir Begovic error, when the goalkeeper rolled the ball out poorly, leading to Remy's winner.

"On the day he had a fantastic performance," Hughes added. "That was his one mistake, and Chelsea had the ability and talent to capitalise on it. "When they get in a winning position, it's usually very difficult to stop them."
