Rennes sack Philippe Montanier and bring in Rolland Courbis as manager

Philippe Montanier was appointed Rennes manager in 2013.

Rennes manager Philippe Montanier has been sacked and replaced by Rolland Courbis after they were dumped out of the Coupe de France by Ligue 2 side Bourg-en-Bresse on Tuesday.

Montanier said directly after the game that he was "ashamed" for the club and the supporters after watching his side lose 3-1 at home in the round of 32.

The former Real Sociedad manager met with Rennes president Rene Ruello on Wednesday morning and was informed that his time at the club had come to an end.

Courbis will take charge until the end of the season. He resigned as manager of Montpellier shortly before Christmas and had only arrived at Rennes as an advisor to Ruello last week.

Montanier was appointed in May 2013 and last summer the ex-Valenciennes boss extended his contract until 2019 after guiding his side to ninth in Ligue 1.

But the former Toulouse goalkeeper has been under pressure this season, largely down to his team's poor home form.

In December, Rennes lost 3-1 to Toulouse at Roazhon Park in the Coupe de la Ligue and they have won only two of the 10 league games they have played in front of their own supporters this season.

The Breton outfit have only lost four league games, however, and they are currently sixth in the table, just five points behind second-placed Monaco.
