William Carvalho seals new deal to stay at Sporting until 2020

William Carvalho has signed a contract extension with Sporting Lisbon until 2020, the Portuguese club announced on Tuesday.

The new deal ties the midfielder to Sporting for an additional two years.

The 23-year-old had been linked to a move to Arsenal during the January transfer window, but Sporting have ensured he will not leave on the cheap by retaining his a €45 million buyout clause.

"I am very happy for the vote of confidence that Sporting CP have given me once more," Carvalho told the club's official website after agreeing an extended stay.

"Sportinguistas, I say to you that I am very happy with the deal which I signed up to 2020 and that you will have total effort on my part to be champions."

Carvalho suffered a broken leg in the early weeks of the season but he has recovered to score twice in 22 appearances in all competitions.

In October, he revealed he would be open to a move to Arsenal in the future.

"I prefer not to say too much, but there is a club with which I've always been fond of: Arsenal. Because of Thierry Henry, a player with whom I have always enjoyed watching.

"Maybe this is why I look with so much affection to the Premier League."
