Barca's Jordi Alba appeal rejected

Barcelona will be without Jordi Alba for Sunday’s La Liga trip to Sevilla after an appeal against a one-game ban imposed on the Blaugrana left-back was rejected.

Ledwith: Barca encouraging in Copa win

Alba, 24, was sent off by referee Pedro Jesus Perez Montero during last Saturday’s shock 3-2 home defeat to Valencia. He picked up a second yellow card for a block on former Los Che teammate Sofiane Feghouli with 13 minutes of the game at the Camp Nou remaining, and Barca’s 10 men were unable to find a way back into the match.

The Catalan club first tried to get the second booking overturned, but Spain’s Competition Committee imposed the one game punishment on Wednesday. Barca then appealed that call, but the Appeals Committee has upheld the ban, as confirmed via a club statement released on Friday.

“The Appeals Committee has rejected Barca’s appeal and maintained the game suspension for Jordi Alba,” the statement read. “This means that the Blaugrana left-back will not be able to play the Liga game at Sevilla’s ground this Sunday. Alba was sent off for a double booking during the previous matchweek, against Valencia.”

That same Appeals Committee meeting on Friday morning also dismissed Real Madrid’s appeal against the three-game punishment received by Cristiano Ronaldo, following his sending off during the 1-1 draw at Athletic Bilbao last weekend.
