Gareth Bale looks set to miss Real Madrid’s glamour friendly against Paris Saint-Germain in Qatar on Thursday as his calf problem has not healed completely during La Liga’s winter break.
• Train: Happier Madrid eyeing 2014 titles
Madrid returned to training in the Spanish capital on Sunday in order to prepare for the exhibition game against the Ligue 1 giants in Doha, but while most of the Blancos players were straight back into action, Bale was surprisingly unable to take part in the session.
When the Welsh winger picked up the calf injury in a challenge with a teammate in training on Dec. 17 it was initially assumed he would be fine within a few days, but he missed the 3-2 win at Valencia before Christmas, and is already a doubt for his side’s first competitive game of 2014 at home to Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu on Jan. 6.
A club statement released after training on Sunday confirmed that Bale had not been able to train with his teammates, but it did not reveal any further details on the seriousness of the issue.
“Real Madrid completed their first training session following the Christmas break,” the statement said. “The team began preparations at Real Madrid City for the friendly, on Jan. 2, against PSG at the Khalifa Stadium in Doha. Carlo Ancelotti had 18 players available for the second-to-last training session of the year. Varane trained indoors, as did Bale, who also went on to train alone out on the field. Coentrao and Khedira continue with their recoveries, while Marcelo and Di Maria were absent with the club’s permission.”
AS say that Bale’s fitness and availability continues to be a concern, pointing out that since joining from Tottenham last summer, the 100 million euro signing has only played for 52 percent of Madrid’s total minutes so far this season -- while the latest injury is his sixth different problem in just five months.
