Del Nido backs Emery to lift Sevilla
Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido has backed coach Unai Emery to quickly turn things around at what is now La Liga's latest 'crisis club'.
Sunday's 3-1 defeat at Valencia left Sevilla bottom of the Primera Division table with just two points from five games, their worst start since the 1958/1959 season.
The rojiblancos chief told Telesevilla that Sevilla's position does not reflect their quality, and insists their Basque boss needs to turn the situation around soon.
"What we must ask of him is to sort things out quickly," Del Nido said. "We have a competitive squad. Unai needs to hit the nail on the head as soon as possible."
Del Nido did accept that the club selling stars including Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo, Geoffrey Kondogbia and Gary Medel last summer, and signing 14 new players to replace them, meant it might take time for the team to gel.
"I am convinced that Emery will continue because he can get us out of this," he said. "The only justification is that a lot of new players have come in, and those who form the base of the team are not playing due to injury. Those who have arrived lately are now the starters."
The lawyer, due to find out soon if his appeal against a seven and half year jail sentence imposed for fraud in December 2011 is successful, called for everyone around Sevilla to be relaxed about the club's current predicament.
"We must be relaxed to analyse the situation because there has been a lot of changes to the squad," Del Nido said. "We must have the calm required to adjust to each other and get the results we expect. [Emery] is the best coach we have had in 15 years."
