Alves offered to donate liver to Abidal

Eric Abidal has told a Spanish radio station that former Barcelona team-mate Dani Alves offered to donate part of his liver when the Frenchman required a life-saving transplant.

Barca deny 'not paid' claims

Abidal, 34, had to undergo the operation in April 2012 after suffering a bout of hepatitis. His cousin, Gerard, was the one who provided part of his own liver for the Monaco defender.

However, Abidal told Catalunya Radio that Alves, who this season has taken the France international's old No. 22 shirt in homage to his former team-mate, had also approached him about providing the organ necessary for surgery.

"My relationship with Dani goes much further than him taking my old No. 22 shirt. When I had to undergo surgery, he offered to donate his liver. Of course, it’s completely out of the question because he is a professional footballer. Our relationship goes much deeper than friendship."

Following the operation, Abidal returned to play for Barcelona last April. However, the Catalan club decided against extending the defender's contract allowing him to join Monaco this summer.

Abidal underwent liver surgery to remove a tumor in March 2011 and returned to play for the final part of last season, including Barca's Champions League final win over Manchester United.
