Sevilla confident that Jorge Sampaoli will extend contract for one more year

Sevilla president Pepe Castro has said he has no concerns over reports linking coach Jorge Sampaoli with the upcoming managerial vacancy at Barcelona.

Luis Enrique will leave Barca in June after three years in charge and Sampaoli, along with Athletic Bilbao's Ernesto Valverde, has been positioned among the front-runners.

However, Castro is confident Sampaoli will sign a contract extension to remain at the Sanchez Pizjuan until 2019 -- his current terms run until next summer.

"I have confidence that Sampaoli will say yes to the offer we have made him to extend his contract for one more year, but we're focused on a complicated week," Castro told Cadena Ser ahead of Tuesday's Champions League round-of-16 second leg tie against Leicester City.

"We don't have to think about Barca or anyone else. He's grateful to Sevilla because it was the club that had faith to bring him across [from South America]."

Sevilla go into the Leicester game with a 2-1 lead as they bid to reach the quarterfinal of Europe's premier competition for the first time since 1958, when they lost 10-2 to Real Madrid over two legs.

In addition, they are third in La Liga, ahead of Atletico Madrid, although back-to-back draws have seen them lose ground on Madrid and Barca.

As well as performing well in Spain and in Europe, Sampaoli has won fans for the way his Sevilla side play football and that has naturally led to him being linked to the Blaugrana.

However, the Catalan club's sporting director Robert Fernandez, while not ruling anyone out, has suggested someone who's worked at the club before would be preferred.

The local media suggest that makes Valverde the favourite and reports in Diario Sport on Tuesday claimed the Athletic coach, who is out of contract in the summer, will make a decision on his future at San Mames within the next 15 days.
