Antoine Griezmann targets trophies in bid to emulate Ronaldo, Messi

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann has told L'Equipe he believes he is getting closer to being at the same level as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

Singled out as a potential star while at Real Sociedad, Griezmann, 25, has fulfilled his promise since joining Atletico Madrid in 2014.

He ended Euro 2016 as the Player of the Tournament and its leading scorer, and the France international insists getting his hands on trophies is the next step he needs to take to be on a par with his peers at Real Madrid and Barcelona.

"I think I still have some things to do before I'm their equal, starting with winning trophies," Griezmann, who helped Atleti finish Champions League runners-up last season, said.

"They have them ... and have them and have them. But I, as I have said in the past, I want to be at their table. And I think I'm getting there little by little. I hope now to stay there for as long as possible."

Griezmann's displays at the European Championship earned him a special place in French football fans' hearts with a recent poll revealing one-in-two of his compatriots would like to see him captain the side

France coach Didier Deschamps has as much faith in Griezmann, who intends to repay that confidence in him, starting with Les Bleus' 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and the Netherlands.

"It's true that it helps when the coach puts everything in place so that you feel as good as possible," he said. "I see it with Atletico Madrid. I go to war for the coach. And with Les Bleus it's the same, I will go to war for Deschamps."
