Atletico Madrid cancel Galatasaray friendly over security concerns

Atletico Madrid have decided against travelling to Turkey to face Galatasaray in a friendly on Saturday due to security concerns, the Istanbul-based club have confirmed.

Atletico were due to play at the Turk Telekom Arena in the Turkish capital this weekend as part of their preparations for the 2016-17 campaign.

However, AS reported last week that Atletico were reconsidering following terrorist attacks in the country and an attempted coup, and Galatasaray have now confirmed that the match has been postponed.

"The Galatasaray-Atletico game has been cancelled due to a request from the Spanish club, due to the special circumstances at the moment in the country," the statement read. "Atletico have expressed their desire to play the game on another date."

Atletico did not immediately make a statement on the game, with the club's officials and players travelling back from Australia to Europe overnight.

AS reported that Atletico were looking to set up another game at short notice as Diego Simeone aims to prepare his squad for their La Liga opener at home to newly promoted Alaves on Sunday Aug. 21.
