La Liga: Real Madrid move one point behind Barca with win at Getafe

Real Madrid boosted their hopes of catching La Liga leaders Barcelona by thrashing struggling Getafe 5-1 on Saturday.

Karim Benzema put a superior Madrid in charge just before the half-hour mark by meeting James' cross at the far post for a career-best 22nd goal of the league campaign. He then laid on the pass for Isco to consolidate the advantage before half-time.

Gareth Bale netted a milestone 16th league goal of the season five minutes after the break, cutting in from the right to plant the ball into the far bottom corner with his left foot. He surpassed his previous best goals tally in the league from 2013-14

Sarabia's 22-yard strike gave Getafe a brief moment to celebrate, but then James danced his way past defenders to score from close range in the 87th minute.

Substitute Jese then presented Ronaldo with the simplest of chances for the prolific Portuguese to score his fifth goal in three games.

Madrid moved past Atletico Madrid into second place and within one point of Barcelona ahead of their games on Sunday.

Sporting Gijon stayed in the relegation zone, one point above Levante and Getafe, after drawing 1-1 at Las Palmas.

Pedro Bigas headed home after just three minutes to put Las Palmas in front, but Sporting winger Jony levelled in the 48th minute to halt Quique Setien's side's run of three consecutive league wins.

Las Palmas moved on to 40 points with another step towards securing survival.

Real Sociedad came down to earth with a bump as local rivals Eibar beat them 2-1 in the Basque derby.

David Zurutuza gave Real Sociedad a seventh-minute lead with his first goal of the season, lifting the ball over Danny Garcia after taking possession from a throw-in and volleying it into the far corner from 18 yards.

But Eibar were back level as Ander Capa's cross picked out Sergi Enrich on 32 minutes and the striker's header took a crucial deflection off Diego Reyes to beat Sociedad goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli.

Eibar's winner came after 58 minutes when Zurutuza carelessly gifted possession to Enrich and his cross evaded Rulli for Gonzalo Escalante to squeeze his header past two defenders.

Pablo Hernandez scored in the 78th minute to help Celta Vigo salvage a 1-1 draw against Real Betis.

Alfred N'Diaye had provided the visiors with a lead in the 24th minute before Hernandez beat Betis keeper Antonio Adan at his near post.

Celta stayed fifth as they try to secure a Europa League spot, two points ahead of Athletic Bilbao.
