Barcelona boss Luis Enrique: Sporting Gijon win would not be definitive

Luis Enrique hopes Barcelona can seize the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table by beating Sporting Gijon on Wednesday but stressed the title race is far from over.

Barca can stretch their lead over second-placed Atletico Madrid to six points and move seven ahead of third-placed Real Madrid if they win the game in Gijon, which was rearranged as a result of their participation in December's Club World Cup in Japan.

Luis Enrique stressed at his prematch news conference, though, that his players are a long way from achieving their aims.

"Winning tomorrow would be a great result, but not definitive," Luis Enrique said. "We are recovering the game we missed. It gives us an opportunity to open a gap on our rivals. It will not be easy. Sporting are a well-coached team with a serious defence, and it's a great stadium."

Gijon-born Luis Enrique began his career at his home-town club before moving to Real Madrid in the summer of 1991 and remains friends with former teammate and current Sporting coach Abelardo Fernandez.

"We have known each other since we were seven years old, and have been through a lot of things together," the Barca boss said. "We are on different benches, but he is like family to me. We could not have imagined this 15 years ago.

"It will be special for me -- it's my home, but I am going to do my job. If our [30-game] unbeaten run breaks, I hope it would be at El Molinon, but I hope it doesn't."

Sporting, currently 16th in La Liga, are unbeaten in their last four matches, and can field Barca loanee Alen Halilovic, who scored in Friday's 2-2 draw with Rayo Vallecano.

"[Halilovic] is getting the playing time we were looking for," Luis Enrique said of the 19-year-old Croatian. "He has things to improve. He is not always starting, but that comes with the development of a young player."

Barca's Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto have been left out of the 18-man Barca squad travelling for the game, which Luis Enrique said was part of the normal rotation of the squad at this stage of the season.

"We have our idea and know how the players are," he said. "We are playing a lot of games in a short space of time. We are just concerned with tomorrow's game now."

Luis Enrique was also asked about the Bruce Springsteen concert at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on May 21, which will prevent Real Madrid's stadium being used as the venue for this year's Copa del Rey final.

"Well, the fans won't be able to go to the concert," he joked.
