Jose Miguel Monje Carrillo to run for RFEF role if Angel Maria Villar is barred

Murcia football federation chief Jose Miguel Monje Carrillo says he will be a candidate if current Spanish FA (RFEF) president Angel Maria Villar is barred from running for re-election, while maintaining that he expects an investigation into Villar's running of the FA to come to nothing.

The Spanish government is investigating whether the RFEF disregarded its own rules to give third tier Recreativo de Huelva a license to compete despite being technically bankrupt and owing €11 million in taxes, while a direct €200,000 loan to the Andalusian club is also being looked at.

Spain's secretary of sport Miguel Cardenal has described the reports of alleged fraud as "very serious." Villar, currently also a FIFA and UEFA vice-president, could be barred from running for an eighth successive term as RFEF chief should wrongdoing be found.

The federation's secretary general Jorge Perez, who has fallen out with Villar in recent times, is widely expected to challenge for the organisation's top position in a vote due on April 22.

Monje told AS that he expected Villar to be allowed to present himself in the elections, but if not he was standing by himself to run.

"I am with Angel, but if in the end he does not go forward, if they exclude him, which I wish in my heart does not happen, or if he goes to UEFA, I will present myself as a candidate for the Spanish job," he said. "I have a lot of support among the other regions."

Monje also suggested it was possible that Villar, who was previously close to former UEFA president Michel Platini, would look to follow Platini as chief of European football's governing body should the Frenchman's appeal to CAS over his current ban from all football be upheld.

"[Villar] wants to present himself for re-election," he said. "Not just that, we also feel that he will present himself at UEFA, because there is a unique opportunity there."

The Spanish government's Consejo Superior de Deportes (Sports Council) has asked the RFEF for all documents relating to any support it gave to Recreativo through recent years.

Monje said he expected Villar to be cleared in the end, after he was not been found guilty of any wrongdoing during the recent probes into corruption at the top of FIFA.

"The CSD is gathering information," he said. "It is only that at the moment. I believe in his innocence. With the FIFA scandal they excluded people and he was left free, that strengthens him."
