Antoine Griezmann, Diego Godin deserve Ballon d'Or nod - Simeone

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has said it is "unfair" that neither Diego Godin nor Antoine Griezmann are on the Ballon d'Or shortlist.

The 23-man list features six Barcelona players and five from Real Madrid, but none from Atletico.

That means Griezmann, who scored 22 La Liga goals last season, and Godin, outstanding at the heart of the Rojiblancos defence, have been overlooked by list compilers FIFA and France Football.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday's Champions League game at home to Astana, Simeone said both the France forward and the Uruguay defender would use being overlooked as motivation.

"That neither Godin nor Griezmann are there is not fair, but it what those making the selection have chosen," he said.

"Griezmann's season was extraordinary, and he has begun again at very high level. And what can you say about Godin?

"But this will make them keep driving themselves on. The only way to change opinions is to keep improving."

Simeone has again been included on the 10-man FIFA Coach of the Year shortlist, alongside Carlo Ancelotti, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola.

But the Argentine said such coaching prizes stemmed from the achievements of a team.

"I am in the place I am thanks to the players, thanks to the team, because without them the coaches cannot transmit what we want," he added. "It depends on the collective."
