Messi scores two in Barcelona's draw; Ronaldo nets three as Real Madrid win

Lionel Messi scored twice but La Liga champions Barcelona wasted a two-goal lead and settled for a 2-2 draw against Deportivo La Coruna in the final league game of the season.

Messi brought his Liga tally to 43 goals this season, but he'll finish five behind Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored a hat trick in Saturday's late game.

Barcelona opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Messi headed in Rafinha's cross for his fastest league goal this season.

Messi doubled their advantage on the hour mark, but Depor found goals from Lucas and Diogo Salmao to spoil the Camp Nou send-off for Xavi Hernandez, who played his last league game before a summer move to Qatari club Al Sadd.

Supporters held up an enormous banner that read: "Thanks Xavi, 17 seasons 1998-2015," and Xavi received a standing ovation when he was replaced by Andres Iniesta with five minutes remaining. He responded by blowing kisses to the stands before showing some tears in the dugout after taking his club record to 765 appearances.

Despite the result, Barcelona celebrated with the league trophy and conducted a lap of honour around the Camp Nou.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick and Martin Odegaard became the youngest footballer to play for Real Madrid in their 7-3 win at Getafe.

All three of Ronaldo's goals came in the first half. It was his eighth league hat trick of the seasons and gave him a personal-best 61 goals in all competitions this season.

Getafe fought valiantly to respond and entered half-time at 3-3 through Sergio Escudero and a Mehdi Lacen brace, but it was all Real after the break.

Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, starting in place of the injured Karim Benzema, supplied the lead two minutes into the second half, and James Rodriguez, Jese and Marcelo all added to the scoresheet before the final whistle of Real's season.

Odegaard, 16, came on for Ronaldo in the 58th minute for the Norway international's first appearance for Los Blancos.

Atletico Madrid and Granada both got what they wanted from a goalless draw. Last year's champions Atletico affirmed their third-place finish and a spot in the Champions League group stage next season.

Granada finished 17th and will just barely stay in the Primera Division based on their head-to-head record against Eibar, who were relegated despite a 3-0 win against already-relegated Cordoba.

La Liga uses head-to-head as the first tiebreaker before goal difference. Depor, Granada and Eibar all finished on 35 points, but Eibar had the worst record against the other two teams, earning only two points from four games.

Eibar manager Gaizka Garitano announced he was stepping down after the Basque club failed to stay in the top flight for a second season.

Almeria will also spend next season in the second tier after losing 3-2 at home to Valencia, who secured a fourth-place finish and a Champions League spot with their victory.

The hosts twice scored to go ahead and provisionally escape the bottom three spots. But Valencia's Nicolas Otamendi answered Thomas Partey's opener from a free kick, and Sofiane Feghouli struck just before half-time to cancel out Fernando Soriano's goal.

After losing goalkeeper Diego Alves to a left-leg injury, Valencia needed Paco Alcacer to run onto a long pass and fire the ball beyond goalie Ruben Martinez with 10 minutes left to clinch a top-four finish and a ticket to Europe's top competition.

Sevilla won 3-2 at Malaga but finished one point behind Valencia in fifth, good enough to qualify for the Europa League, but they could still enter the Champions League group stage instead if they win the Europa League final against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on Wednesday.

Athletic Bilbao beat Villarreal 4-0, but both teams will play in the Europa League next season.

Seventh-placed Athletic will have to endure two rounds of qualifying unless they beat Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey final, in which case they will take sixth-placed Villarreal's spot in the group stage, and the Yellow Submarine will have to qualify instead.

In other results on Saturday's final day, 10-man Celta Vigo beat Espanyol 3-2, Real Sociedad topped Rayo Vallecano 4-2, and Levante and Elche played to a 0-0 draw.
