BARCELONA, Spain -- Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has undergone emergency surgery for acute appendicitis.
The Spanish club said in a statement that Enrique's surgery was successful and he will be discharged "in the next day or so."
The 44-year-old Enrique signed a two-year contract in May to become Barcelona's new manager, replacing Argentine Gerardo Martino.
He played for Barcelona from 1996-2004 and coached its B team from 2008-11.
The club also said that preseason training will begin on July 14, the day after the World Cup final. However, any players involved in the latter stages of the competition in Brazil are unlikely be required to join up immediately.
