Schuster hopes for Baptista Malaga stay

Malaga boss Bernd Schuster is hoping to keep Julio Baptista at the club, although the attacker is being asked to take a substantial pay cut to remain at La Rosaleda.

Julio Baptista has been at Malaga since signing from Roma in 2011.

Last season’s Champions League quarter-finalists have parted with big earners Joaquin, Martin Demichelis and Jeremy Toulalan since the end of last season, leaving Baptista as the club’s highest paid player.

But with Malaga keen to further reduce their wage bill, they are keen for former Arsenal and Real Madrid player to take a cut – a move that has thrown Baptista’s future into doubt.

“I don’t know if we can arrive at a solution so that Julio stays,” Schuster said. “If we are talking about him as a footballer then I prefer he remains here as I know what he’s capable of.

“If he stays free of injury and gets some luck then he would be an important cog in our team as he possesses a lot of quality and is a model professional.”

Baptista, 31, has been linked with a move back to his native Brazil with Internacional.
