Amat, 21, becomes Michael Laudrup’s second summer arrival, joining midfielder Jose Canas in swapping La Liga for the Premier League.

A statement on the Swansea website said: “Swansea City have completed the £2.5 million signing of central defender Jordi Amat from Espanyol, subject to a medical and international clearance.''

Amat spent last season on loan at Rayo Vallecano, for whom Swans forward Michu starred before moving to the Liberty Stadium last summer.

Laudrup, who has previously coached in Spain with Getafe and Mallorca, has raided La Liga for a number of players since taking over at Swansea last summer.

The Capital One Cup holders have also tabled club-record offers - thought to be around £10 million - for Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis and Vitesse Arnhem's Wilfried Bony, as Laudrup looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the 2013-14 campaign.

Bony's agent, Francis Kacou, Arnhem newspaper De Gelderlander a £10.2 million deal had been done for the Ivory Coast international but Vitesse posted a statement on their website which read: "Various media have reported that Wilfried Bony is to transfer to Premier League club Swansea City. This message is incorrect.

“There is admittedly much interest in the striker, the top scorer in the Eredivisie last season, and Swansea City are one of the interested clubs. However, a transfer is not the case.''
