Fernando Torres scored in consecutive matches for the first time in almost two and a half years as Atletico Madrid edged past Getafe to leapfrog rivals Real Madrid into second place in the Primera Division.

Torres has struggled to reproduce his best form since returning to his first club 13 months ago, but on Sunday evening he gave Atleti fans a reminder of the good old days with an instinctive finish at the back post.

The visitors could not find a second, but one goal proved to be enough as Diego Simeone's side moved above their neighbours Real Madrid into second place behind leaders Barcelona.

Torres, who scored the final goal in the 3-1 win over Eibar last week, took little time to bag his fourth goal of the season.

With less than two minutes gone, the 31-year-old sprinted free from his marker at the back post and tapped the ball into the home net from Yannick Carrasco's cross despite pressure from Getafe goalkeeper Vicente Guaita.

It was the first time the local hero had scored in back to back games since October 2013 when he was at Chelsea.

Gabi sent Torres through again in the 13th minute, but the former Liverpool man shot wide. Antoine Griezmann then teed up Carrasco, but Guaita was equal to his right-foot shot.

Getafe could barely muster a chance in the first half and fared no better after the restart. Santiago Vergini shot wide in the 66th minute, but otherwise, the hosts never looked like equalising and Atletico saw out a narrow yet comfortable win at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.
