Barcelona to appeal Jordi Alba red

Barcelona say they will appeal the red card shown to Jordi Alba during Saturday’s shock 3-2 La Liga defeat to Valencia at the Camp Nou.

Jordi Alba is dismissed during Barcelona's defeat at home to Valencia.
Jordi Alba picked up two yellow cards against his former side.

Tomas: Early warning signs

Former Los Che left-back Alba was shown a second yellow with 13 minutes of Saturday’s game remaining.

But with Barca down to 10 men, they were unable to find a way back into the match, slipping three points behind new leaders Atletico Madrid at the top of the Primera Division standings.

The sending off should mean the Spain international is automatically suspended for next Saturday’s tricky La Liga game at Sevilla.

However, the Catalan club confirmed in a statement released on their official website that they will seek to have the decision by referee Pedro Jesus Perez Montero to hand out a second booking, for what they consider to have been an innocuous challenge, overturned.

“The club will appeal Jordi Alba’s red card to the Competition Committee,” the statement read. “The FC Barcelona left-back was shown his second yellow card on 77 minutes for ‘knocking down an opponent in a dispute for the ball,’ according to Perez Montero’s postmatch referee report. The defender was shown his first yellow card on 51 minutes.”

Barca's appeal will not be the only case being considered by La Liga's Competition Committee this Wednesday, with Real Madrid also looking to ensure that their attacker Cristiano Ronaldo does not pick up a lengthy suspension for his sending off during Sunday's 1-1 draw at Athletic Bilbao.
