Simeone wants to boost Atletico squad

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has said he is working closely with the club's owners to try to strengthen the squad in January.

Diego Simeone says he is not confident of breaking Barcelona and Real Madrid's monopoly.
Simeone's Atletico are in superb form.

Atletico are currently joint-top of the Primera Division and are also going strongly in the Champions League, in which they face AC Milan in the last 16.

However questions have been raised over whether Simeone's squad has the depth to sustain a challenge on both fronts.

The coach has long wanted to add a playmaker to his squad, with former Colchonero Diego Ribas and Chelsea’s Juan Mata and out-of-favour Kevin De Bruyne among those mentioned.

And Simeone, speaking as he picked up a 2013 AS Deportes Prize in Madrid on Thursday, told the Spanish paper he was hopeful some reinforcements could arrive during the winter transfer window.

"We are always talking with the people who have most to do with that -- [president] Enrique [Cerezo] and [chief executive] Miguel [Angel Gil], with the sporting director [Jose Luis Caminero]," he said. "We are all working along the same lines, hoping that someone new can arrive to help us."

Asked whether Atletico could continue their current form, Simeone stuck to his mantra of only looking one day ahead.

"I believe, honestly, that the best way to arrive at these situations is to go day-by-day," he said.

"I would compare it to a doctor who is going to operate. He who pays, the patient or the football fan, only wants the operation to go well. But the doctor needs the anaesthetist to do his job well, the surgeon also, the nurse… Or an architect with the foundations, the pillars.

"We need to withdraw ourselves a bit. It is normal for the fans to want to end up champions, but we must dedicate ourselves to building the house."
