Transfer Rater: Walker to Barca, Benzema to PSG

Zidane tipped for coaching success

Willy Sagnol has tipped former France international teammate Zinedine Zidane to have a great career as a coach.

Zinedine Zidane has much to teach Gareth Bale, on and off the pitch.
Zinedine Zidane is currently working as an assistant to Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.

• Holyman on Benzema

Zidane, 41, became assistant coach to Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid when the Italian moved to the Spanish capital this summer. The former France World Cup winner has made no secret of his desire to take sole charge of a team in the future, and Sagnol, 36, told Infosport+ the man with whom he finished runner-up at the 2006 World Cup would make a fine coach.

"We did our coaching badges together. He really wants to learn and not just go out there and say, 'I'm Zidane, I want a team'. I think that's really positive," said Sagnol, himself recently and successfully promoted from national youth teams director at the French Football Federation to France Under-21 coach.

"Being a coach is so up-and-down. You can be in one place one minute and another the next, so it's difficult to predict the future, but Zidane, with his past as a player, if he learns well, if he has good experiences at the start, why not? It would be a great story. He's someone who always reserved what he had to say to the squad first before speaking out publicly."
