Djukic is staying at Valencia - Salvo

Valencia president Amadeo Salvo backed coach Miroslav Djukic after Sunday's 3-1 home win over Sevilla ended a run of four successive defeats.

It had been thought Djukic could leave the club after only a few months in charge had Valencia lost against Sevilla, with pressure having grown amid setbacks including last weekend's 3-1 La Liga loss at Real Betis and Thursday's 3-0 Europa League home defeat to Swansea.

But a Jonas double strike and late Victor Ruiz header brought a second La Liga victory of the season, and Salvo told Canal Plus the Serbian would remain in his job until the end of the campaign.

“Whatever happens, Djukic will finish the season at Valencia,” he said.

Djukic said he thought Sunday’s game would be a turning point, and recalled how fans at the Mestalla had put pressure on Rafa Benitez during his spell as coach.

“Benitez was questioned, and we went on to be La Liga champions,” the former Valladolid boss, who played under Benitez, said. “We are more convinced now, with a better atmosphere. We were honest with ourselves, and we can see now more clearly where we must go.”

Players who had looked disorganised in recent weeks gave a much better showing on Sunday and deserved the result which left Sevilla bottom of the Primera Division table.

Djukic said his men had responded well , explaining: “We had a very difficult situation, the team was not good.

“On top of that, the fans could have gone against us. But the players went out on the pitch to go for the win, with a very good attitude.”
