Primera Division new boys Cordoba enjoyed a happy homecoming back in the top flight, coming from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw at home to Celta Vigo.

Fabian Orellana gave Eduardo Berrizo's side the lead early in the second half with a fortuitous goal that owed a lot to a lapse in concentration by Cordoba goalkeeper Juan Carlos, but Fede Cartabia saved his team-mate's blushes by thumping in an equaliser seven minutes later.

That gave the Andalusian side their first point of the season following last week's 2-0 defeat at Real Madrid.

The Nuevo Arcangel stadium was packed to the rafters for Cordoba's first Primera Division game in 42 years, but the hosts were unable to give their fans much to shout about in the first half, with Celta doing most of the attacking.

The dangerous Orellana was the visitors' most lively player, making incursion after incursion into the Cordoba box. He had the defence on the back foot with a darting run into the box early on and later forced Juan Carlos to make a fine save from his stinging shot.

Alex Lopez also could have put Berrizo's side ahead before the break, but crashed a close range, near post shot well over the bar.

Cordoba's only real attempt of the first half was a curling shot from outside the area by the exciting Cartabia, which shaved the far post.

Celta took the lead seven minutes into the second half. Orellana received a cross-field ball from Nolito on the right and twisted his way past a Cordoba defender to glimpse a sight of the near post.

The Chilean tried his luck and was rewarded for his audacity, his shot bouncing straight through the hands of the usually reliable Juan Carlos and into the net.

The hosts were quick to respond and went straight down the other end. Substitute Borja Garcia saw his shot deflected over the bar and then Cartabia appealed for a penalty, claiming he had been fouled by Carles Planas.

Yet it was not be long before the Andalusians drew level. Fausto Rossi got down the right wing and delivered a high ball into the box, which striker Mike Havenaar flicked into the path of Cartabia and the Argentinian drilled the ball low into the near bottom corner.

Cordoba endured a few nervy moments before the final whistle sounded.

Substitute Charles struck the post for Celta from close range, but was in an offside position anyway. Nolito then got on the end of a cross from Orellana, but the former Barcelona hopeful could only shoot into the hands of Juan Carlos.

Albert Ferrer's side could even have snatched a late winner, with substitute Xisco racing on to a through ball by Cartabia in the box, but the former Newcastle man was brushed aside by a Celta defender before he could get his shot away.
